Animation by style and technical format

Animation style and technical format are separate decisions. Style choices include realistic motion capture, hand-keyed stylised animation, and iGaming-specific formats. Format choices include 3D and 2D Spine skeletal, with pre-rendered video for cinematics. Choosing the wrong combination adds cost and reduces quality: a stylised mobile game does not need motion capture data, and a slot symbol animation should not use a 3D rig when Spine handles it more efficiently.

Animation integration and engine delivery

Animation assets that do not integrate cleanly into the engine create late-stage rework. Game-Ace delivers animation with rig validation, blend tree documentation, and in-engine integration support as part of the production scope. Animation states, transition conditions, and event triggers are configured in your engine project and tested in-context before final delivery.

Why studios outsource animation to Game-Ace

Full animation coverage across 2D, 3D, and specialised iGaming formats in one in-house studio.

  1. All animation types in one team. 2D character, 3D character, rigging, VFX, environment, slot animation, cinematics, and AR/VR are all produced in-house without subcontracting to separate specialists.
  2. iGaming animation expertise. Slot symbol cycles and casino animations are produced to operator and platform delivery standards, including timing windows, file size constraints, and loop quality requirements.
  3. Engine integration included. Animation is delivered with rig documentation, blend tree setup, and in-engine integration support for Unity and Unreal Engine.
  4. Style flexibility. Realistic, stylised, hyper-casual, and iGaming animation styles are all available. Style is selected based on your game and audience, not a standard studio output.
  5. Full IP transfer and NDA. All animation files, rig source data, and project files transfer to the client. NDA is signed before any project details are shared.

Game animation production cost

Animation at Game-Ace is priced per asset set or as a monthly engagement. A complete 3D character rig with keyframe animation starts from €3,500. Dedicated animators on a monthly engagement start from €4,000 per month. Full animation production for a mid-scale game typically ranges from €25,000–€100,000+ depending on character count and state volume.

Game animation production process

1.
Brief and animation list

Animation list, style references, engine format requirements, and delivery schedule are confirmed before any production begins.

2.
Workflow and format selection

Animation type (2D skeletal, 3D keyframe, frame-by-frame) and delivery format are agreed based on game type, platform, and visual requirements.

3.
Rigging

Character rigs are built and validated against your animation system before keyframe production begins. Blend tree structure and transition requirements are agreed at this stage.

4.
Animation production

Animation cycles are produced in batches with review at each batch before the next begins. Style guide compliance and technical specs are checked per asset.

5.
Integration and in-context review

Animations are integrated into your engine with event binding and state machine configuration. In-context review in the actual game build confirms visual and technical quality.

6.
Final delivery

All animation files, source data, rig documentation, and integration notes delivered. IP transfer confirmed at close.

Rig validation and blend tree structure are agreed before animation production begins to prevent late-stage integration rework.

Game animation project deliverables

Game animation deliverables with character rigs source files and blend tree docs

The Game-Ace animation handover includes rig documentation, source files, state machine specifications, and full IP transfer at project close, ready for direct in-game integration.

  1. Animation files. FBX, BVH, or Spine export in your required format with all animation states as agreed in the animation list.
  2. Rig source files. Maya, Blender, or Spine project files with full rig hierarchy, weights, and corrective shapes.
  3. Blend tree documentation. State machine layout, transition conditions, and blend parameter mapping for Unity Animator or Unreal Animation Blueprint.
  4. VFX animation assets. Particle system files and flipbook atlases with trigger event timing documentation.
  5. Cinematic project files. Unity Timeline or Unreal Sequencer files for cutscene sequences where applicable.
  6. IP transfer confirmation. Written transfer covering all animation assets, rig data, and source files at delivery close.

Frequently asked questions

Available animation styles include realistic keyframe (suited to action and RPG genres), stylised and exaggerated (mobile casual, hyper-casual, and platformers), hand-drawn frame-by-frame (indie and artistic productions), slot and casino flourish style (iGaming), and cinematic realism for cutscenes and trailers. Style is selected to match your game's visual language, not a default output.

A 3D character rig with 10–15 animation states takes 3–5 weeks from rig sign-off. A 2D Spine rig with the same state count takes 2–3 weeks. Frame-by-frame animation is estimated per frame count. Timeline scales with character complexity, number of blend states, and revision cycles. Animation lists with clear state definitions and reference video move faster than open briefs.

Unity delivery includes FBX files with named clips, Animator Controller setup, and blend tree documentation. Unreal delivery includes FBX with skeleton, Animation Blueprint structure, and montage setup where needed. Spine delivery includes skeleton JSON, atlas, and PNG files with Spine Unity runtime configuration. Integration is tested in your actual project, not in a generic test scene.

Mobile animation optimisation covers several areas validated throughout production:
  • Bone count: Kept within Unity and Unreal mobile skinned mesh renderer limits. Excess bones are merged or removed without visible quality loss.
  • Animation compression: Keyframe reduction applied to remove redundant frames. Float precision reduced from 32-bit to 16-bit where visual difference is below perception threshold.
  • Blend tree depth: Blend tree complexity is kept low to minimise CPU cost on mobile hardware. State machines are reviewed for unnecessary transitions before integration.
Performance targets per character are agreed at rig sign-off and validated on a defined low-end device before final delivery.

Skeletal animation rigs a character once and animates via bone transformations. It supports runtime blending, IK, and procedural modification, making it efficient for characters with many states. Frame-by-frame draws every frame independently, giving maximum artistic control but higher asset volume and no runtime blending. Most game productions use skeletal for gameplay characters and frame-by-frame for VFX and key visual moments where per-frame quality matters.

Revision scope is agreed at project start. Standard production includes two rounds of revision per animation batch before final delivery. Revisions beyond this are discussed and billed at an agreed day rate.
