What our 2D animators can do for you

2D game animation storyboarding

Storyboarding

Our 2D animators produce storyboards that define narrative flow, timing, camera behaviour, and key action moments before animation production begins, reducing rework in later stages.

What 2D animation work requires

2D game animation requires animators who understand engine constraints alongside motion principles. Frame budgets, sprite atlas limits, and Spine runtime compatibility cannot be treated as post-production concerns. Game-Ace 2D animators work with performance targets defined upfront, delivering animation packages that are engine-ready and compatible with the client's build pipeline.

Engagement models for animation projects

Clients hire individual 2D animators on a dedicated monthly basis or bring in an animation team for a full content production sprint. Both models include direct access to the animator, structured weekly deliverables, and source file handover at each milestone. IP transfer covers all animation assets at project close.

Why hire 2D animators from Game-Ace

Game-Ace 2D animators work with game engines daily and deliver animation assets that are production-ready without additional cleanup.

  1. Game-pipeline expertise, not just motion skills. Our animators produce frame-by-frame and rigged animation in formats compatible with Unity, Unreal, Godot, Cocos2d, and HTML5 pipelines.
  2. iGaming and slot animation experience. We have produced slot machine animations, casino UI transitions, and bonus round sequences for multiple iGaming operators and platforms.
  3. Spine runtime-ready deliverables. All Spine animation output is exported and tested against the target runtime version. No format conversion issues at integration.
  4. Full IP transfer and NDA. All animation source files and exports transfer to the client at project close. NDAs are signed before any work begins.
  5. Scalable from single animator to team. Hire one dedicated 2D animator or assemble a full animation team. Team composition adjusts as content scope grows or contracts.
Benefits Of Choosing 2D Animators

Cost of hiring 2D animators

Hiring a dedicated 2D animator from Game-Ace starts from €3,500 per month for a mid-level specialist. Senior animators with Spine expertise or iGaming experience are priced higher. Per-project animation packages are also available and estimated based on state count, frame requirements, and delivery format.

Our 2D animator hiring process

1.
Requirements review

We review animation scope, style references, engine target, frame requirements, and deadline to determine the experience level and tool profile we source for.

2.
Animator selection

We identify animators from our in-house team whose portfolio matches the project style: frame-by-frame, rigged, Spine, or slot/iGaming-focused work.

3.
Portfolio and technical review

Shortlisted animators are evaluated on motion quality, engine format compatibility, state-machine awareness, and ability to work within defined atlas and frame budgets.

4.
Client interview

Client reviews shortlisted candidates with portfolio context and technical notes provided for each. Interviews are scheduled at the client's preferred time.

5.
Selection and contract

After client approval, engagement terms, deliverable format, and communication cadence are agreed. NDA and IP transfer terms are signed before work starts.

6.
Work start and delivery

Animators begin work within the agreed start window. Weekly deliverables, source file checkpoints, and milestone reviews keep production on schedule.

Typical time from brief to first deliverables is 1 to 2 weeks.

2D animator engagement deliverables

2D animation deliverables overview

Game-Ace 2D animator engagements deliver source files, Spine rig documentation, sprite atlas exports, and engine-ready packages to the client's pipeline at every milestone.

  1. Animated sprite sheets and atlas files. All character, environment, and props animations exported in engine-ready sprite sheet or atlas format.
  2. Spine project files and runtime exports. Spine source files and runtime-compatible exports for the target engine version.
  3. Animation source files. Original project files in Adobe Animate, Toon Boom Harmony, or Spine format, depending on tool agreement.
  4. State reference documentation. Animation state names, transition logic, and playback notes for integration with the client's animation controller.
  5. Storyboards and reference frames. Pre-production storyboard files and key frame references used during production.
  6. Post-delivery integration support. We assist with animation integration review if issues arise after handover, within the agreed support window.

Hire 2D animators FAQ

Monthly 2D animator pricing depends on specialism. Mid-level rates start from €2,800/month. Senior animators with Spine expertise or iGaming experience range from €4,000 to €5,500/month. Per-project pricing is available for defined animation packages with a fixed state count.

Our 2D animators are proficient in Adobe Animate, Toon Boom Harmony, TVPaint, and Spine. Adobe After Effects and Photoshop are used for composite and pre-production work. Tool selection follows the client's pipeline and export format requirements. Most game animation deliverables are produced in Spine or Adobe Animate for maximum engine compatibility.

Spine animation is a core capability in our 2D animation team. Deliverables are exported and tested against the target Spine runtime version, with state names, attachment labels, and skin configurations matching the client's animation controller setup. This avoids format mismatch issues at integration.

A useful 2D animation brief covers:
  • Style reference: Sample animations or art direction documents showing the target visual style.
  • State list: Named animation states required (idle, run, attack, death, etc.) with frame count targets where known.
  • Engine and export format: Target engine and runtime version for Spine exports or sprite sheet format for frame-by-frame work.
  • Timeline: Delivery milestones and total project duration.
Missing information is collected during the initial requirements review. An incomplete brief does not block the engagement from starting.

For Spine animation, assets are imported using the official Spine-Unity runtime. Animation states are mapped to the Animator Controller or managed directly through the SkeletonAnimation component. For frame-by-frame sprite animation, we deliver optimised atlas files compatible with Unity's Sprite Editor. Both methods are tested against the target Unity version before delivery.

Budget constraints are defined at brief stage and enforced throughout production. Our animators work within sprite atlas limits, frame count targets, and texture memory constraints daily. Budgets established for mobile or browser targets are documented and validated before final delivery.
