The RC Mayhem project aimed to quickly prototype a nostalgic yet modernized RC car racing game inspired by early 2000s casual games. Using Unity’s efficient prototyping capabilities, our team created this action-packed experience within a month, featuring quick, accessible gameplay on straightforward tracks. RC Mayhem captures fast races with a touch of chaos, where players control RC cars with unique abilities, battling through an abandoned mall setting.
RC Mayhem brings a fresh approach to RC racing with easy-to-learn, fast-paced mechanics. Players command RC cars on inventive tracks inspired by the abandoned mall setting, complete with various obstacles and twists. Simple controls keep the focus on fun and strategy, while speed boosts scattered along the course add tactical depth, allowing players to time their pickups for peak impact.
The game encourages replayability by incorporating a point-based scoring system, where players earn points based on completion time, boost usage, and precision. Our system motivates players to refine their performance.
RC Mayhem includes several engaging features that enhance its unique gameplay:
Unity’s versatility proved ideal for RC Mayhem, enabling quick adaptation. Unity provides an excellent opportunity for fine-tuning physics behavior, and we chose a familiar arcade approach with an emphasis on fun. Initially sourced models from Unity’s Asset Store were redesigned and refined to better suit the game's style, ensuring optimal visual quality without custom modeling from scratch.
To speed up development, we purchased low-poly car assets and reworked them. This streamlined prototyping, enabling us to choose the best models that fit gameplay perfectly, skipping concept and form exploration, and moving straight to final asset creation, enhancing our prototype's effectiveness and visual quality.
In a span of one month, the RC Mayhem team crafted an engaging, functional prototype that effectively showcased the team’s rapid development skills. Key achievements include:
